WINNIPEG, Manitoba (LifeSiteNews) –– Premier of Manitoba Heather Stefanson has promised that should her Progressive Conservative government be re-elected this fall, she will enhance parental rights by mandating that schools inform parents if their child wants to identify as a different “gender.”
At a press conference last week, Stefanson said, “We believe that parents know what is in the best interest of their children.”
“That’s why a re-elected PC government will formalize and enhance rights for parents and guardians in the Public Schools Act,” she added.

Stefanson said that her party is hearing that “parents want to be better informed so they can make decisions on behalf of their children.”
In addition to requiring that schools must inform parents about their children when it comes to “gender identity,” she has promised her PC government will enshrine in the province’s Public Schools Act a right for them to be informed about the curriculum.
Also, to be added will be the right for parents to be notified before any presentations from outside parties are held in public schools, while always maintaining an opt-out option.
A reporter asked Stefanson directly if she was in favor of having parents be informed should their child want to be identified as a different gender.
She replied in the affirmative, explaining that “[w]e know parents know what’s in the best interest of their kids. That will all be part of the consultation process.”
Manitoba heads to a general election on October 3, 2023.
Despite Stefanson’s apparent pro-family stance, Campaign Life Coalition has given her a “red light” rating for her pro-abortion views. This rating came after she, in 2022, said in an X (formerly Twitter) post that she is firmly in favor of abortion “rights.”
She became Premier of Manitoba in late 2021 after winning a party leadership race.
Stefanson is the third Canadian premier who has come out in favor of parents having the right to be informed of any changes their child may express regarding “gender identity.”
Last month, the New Brunswick Progressive Conservatives failed to trigger a leadership review of Premier Blaine Higgs over his decision to add parental protections to its Gender Identity policy for public schools.
Just yesterday, the government of Saskatchewan under its Premier Scott Moe announced that parents must be informed should their child want to identify as a different name or “gender” in school, and that parents can opt their kids out of sex-ed. Saskatchewan also announced that all third parties, such as Planned Parenthood, are henceforth banned from giving presentations at schools.
While LGBT activists have gone after the like of Higgs and Moe for their slight pushback against gender ideology, a recent Leger poll has shown that Canadians in general are in favor of supporting parental rights in education, especially in regards to what material is being shared with children.
