BRASILIA, Brazil (LifeSiteNews) — Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro published tweets supporting the unborn just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

On June 24, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Brazilian government published two pro-life tweets, one from the pro-life president’s account and one from the government’s official account.

“May God continue to give strength and wisdom to those who protect the innocence and future of our children, in Brazil and in the world. Good evening, everyone!” read an English translation of Bolsonaro’s tweet.

“Brazil defends life and family as Constitutional precepts and, since 2019, the Brazilian government has been adopting measures to strengthen what the legislation determines,” tweeted the Brazilian government.

In May, Bolsonaro met with Tonio de Mello, the founder of the Jesus Menino community which cares for disabled children, saying that it is “a mission from God” to “fight in defense of life.”

“I believe it is a mission from God that has been entrusted to me,” Bolsonaro said. “He calls me to do everything possible for the good of all.”

“He is the one who was in front for me to [be] elect[ed] and keep me standing in the face of so many problems in the whole world,” he continued.

“Life begins at conception. Obviously, there are people who want to legalize abortion. It shouldn’t happen, for our own sake, for the defense of life, and for our last victory against abortion.”

Abortion is illegal in Brazil with exceptions only if the mother’s life is in danger, in cases of rape, or if the baby suffers from anencephaly, a congenital brain disorder.

Many U.S. states have outlawed abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, largely owing to “trigger laws” set up in anticipation of the historic decision.

A total of ten states have totally banned abortions while many others have drastically limited access to abortion.
