ROME (LifeSiteNews) – After more than two years of some of the strictest COVID restrictions in the world, Italy has dropped jab mandates for health workers and teachers under conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

On November 1, the new Meloni government approved its first package of measures relating to ending COVID regulations.

The new Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci said that part of the reason why unvaccinated health workers were allowed back to work was “the worrying shortage of medical and health personnel.”

Meloni expressed that she does not believe it was good to politicize medication or illness. For this reason mandates have been proven to be ineffective.

She said it was wrong that vaccines and mandates became “an electoral campaign issue.”

The new government has been smeared by the left as “fascist” and “far-right,” however Meloni herself has stated she is committed to personal liberty under the Italian constitutional framework.

The move to end jab mandates has sparked criticism of leftist politicos for their insistence on continuing mandates which override a person’s right to bodily autonomy and conscience.

Meloni’s rise to prominence was seen as a surprise to some international observers. Italy has seen a pendulum swing back to a right-wing majority in the electorate after years of oppressive and heavy-handed COVID measures.
