(LifeSiteNews) – Republicans should fight to remove President Joe Biden from office over his “treasonous” handling of security at the United States’ southern border, argues Washington Times opinion editor Charles Hurt.

Making the case in a recent Times op-ed and appearance on Fox News, Hurt argues that while the Biden family’s “rampant self-dealing, bribery and influence-peddling around the world” (previously covered by LifeSiteNews) is “as shameless as it is obvious,” making those offenses the focus of impeachment proceedings would “miss an opportunity to broaden Republicans’ mandate into something even more important and something that would make a real difference in the lives of regular voters.”

Instead, he calls on Republicans to impeach Biden “over his refusal to enforce American laws that protect our borders,” “executive orders dismantling the border,” and “publicly inviting illegals to swarm into our country.”

“The brave men and women who wear the Border Patrol uniform and risk their lives every day to protect our borders are demoralized — if they are lucky,” Hurt writes. “The unlucky ones are vilified and persecuted by this administration for doing their job. Yet Mr. Biden is not finished. Border Patrol agents predict that with this administration’s latest policy changes, hundreds of thousands more will be pouring across our border every month by summertime.”

Biden has presided over a surge of illegals entering the United States and being released inside the country, following the reversal of several Trump-era border policies, such as the previous administration’s third-country agreements with the governments of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to have them hold refugees while their applications for political asylum in America were reviewed.

On top of the long-discussed impact of illegal immigration on the job market, crime, public services, national security, and future elections, Biden has exempt border trespassers from the COVID-19 mandates his administration has attempted to impose on Americans. Estimates of illegals who have tested positive for COVID-19 after crossing the border this year range from 20 percent to more than half

Most recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention announced plans to end the Title 42 public health authority, which has facilitated quick deportation of illegals during a pandemic and revocation of which is expected to drastically expand the number of illegal border crossers per day by the thousands.

Conservatives allege that the double-standard originates from Democrats’ view of migration from Mexico as a reliable source of new Democrat voters.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has also suggested illegal immigration as the strongest grounds for a hypothetical Biden impeachment, but many continue to doubt that the GOP’s moderate leadership would actually attempt something as explosive as impeachment (Republicans never seriously explored impeaching former President Barack Obama, despite grounds for doing so). House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy recently downplayed the possibility during an appearance on Fox.

Further, while many expect this fall’s midterm elections to go well for Republicans, there are not enough seats in play to give the GOP the 67 Senate votes that would be necessary to actually convict and remove Biden from office. Even so, an impeachment battle would brand Biden as one of the few U.S. presidents to be impeached and signal to the public just how severe Republicans consider his actions to be, as did the Democrat impeachments of former President Donald Trump.
