CHICAGO (LifeSiteNews) – The American Medical Association (AMA) adopted a new policy last week that calls government restrictions on abortion and contraception a “violation of human rights.” The decision follows the leak of the majority Supreme Court (SCOTUS) opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health.

“Responding to a growing threat of over-policing and surveillance of reproductive health services, the nation’s physicians and medical students at the AMA Annual Meeting adopted policy recognizing that it is a violation of human rights when government intrudes into medicine and impedes access to save, evidence-based reproductive health services, including abortion and contraception,” the AMA said in a statement released last Tuesday.

The AMA also stated that it will “continue to challenge criminal or civil penalties on patients who receive reproductive health services, as well as physicians, other health professionals, health systems, and patient advocates for aiding, assisting, supporting, or providing reproductive health services or referrals to patients.”

Incoming AMA president Jack Resnick Jr., speaking about the new policy, said, “A growing number of current and pending laws insert government into the patient-physician relationship by dictating limits or bans on reproductive health services and criminally punish or penalize patients for their health decisions.”

“The new policy also calls for AMA to seek legal protections for patients who cross state lines to receive reproductive health services, as well as legal protections for physicians and others who support or provide reproductive health services or referrals to patients who cross state lines,” he continued.

The announcement follows the leaked majority opinion in Dobbs, which showed that SCOTUS is expected to end a nearly 50-year nationwide abortion mandate by overturning Roe v. Wade. AMA president Gerald Harmon said in a statement after the leak that “the American Medical Association is deeply concerned by the contents and implications of the draft Supreme Court opinion for the [Dobbs] case that became public this week.”

“The opinion would lead to government interference in the patient-physician relationship, dangerous intrusion into the practice of medicine, and potentially criminalize care,” Harmon continued. SCOTUS’ ruling on Dobbs is expected to be released before July. The AMA filed an amicus brief during hearings for Dobbs, in which the organization urged SCOTUS to uphold Roe.

The AMA has a history of supporting leftist causes. According to FOX News, the organization released a 54-page guide to critical race theory (CRT) called “Advancing Health Equity,” which argues that the implementation of CRT will help to fight racial inequality. The guide cites a guide put out by Race Forward, a pro-CRT organization, called “Guide to Counter-Narrating the Attacks on Critical Race Theory.”

The AMA has instructed doctors to promote the use of abortion-tainted COVID-19 jabs while also attempting to malign the use of ivermectin as an effective means to combat the disease.

The organization also urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this week to de-regulate use of contraceptive pills, despite evidence that shows the dangerous effects of contraceptives to women’s health.

In December 2019, the Journal of the American Medical Association published an article that argued the government should override a parent’s decision not to allow their child to transition, stating, “We conclude that situations where a parent prevents a minor from receiving treatments related to gender dysphoria violate the Harm Principle and justify state intervention.”
