WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Pro-life congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana has been elected speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. The final vote tally was 220-209.
Johnson, 51, succeeds Kevin McCarthy in the role after Republicans were unable to rally behind several prominent candidates this week, including Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, whose failure has been largely credited to Trump’s public opposition to him.
Johnson has been praised by Terry Schilling of the D.C.-based American Principles Project as “a stalwart conservative and pro-family champion during his time in the House.”
Johnson emerged as the GOP’s speaker designate Tuesday evening after receiving 128 votes during the third round of secret balloting with fellow party members. He held a press conference afterwards stating that the conference is “united.”

Republicans of all stripes expressed satisfaction with Johnson, including former President Trump, who called him “smart” and said he thinks he’s “going to make a fantastic Speaker.”

Johnson currently serves on the Judiciary Committee alongside Rep. Jordan, with whom he has called out the FBI’s targeting of Catholics who attend the Latin Mass. He previously chaired the Republican Study Committee, a conservative caucus that monitors GOP policies in the House.
An Evangelical, Johnson is widely known for being socially conservative. In the 1990s, he and his wife Kelly worked to oppose lax divorce laws. In the 2000s, he was employed by the Christian-oriented law firm Alliance Defending Freedom, where he opposed homosexual “marriage” and took on religious liberty cases. He is also a longtime opponent of abortion, having an “A+” rating from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
Johnson also has ties to the Family Research Council. In October 2022, he introduced the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act. The bill prohibits federal dollars from being used to push woke propaganda on minors under the age of 10. He has likewise been a boisterous opponent of the pro-LGBT “Equality Act.”
Johnson further voted against certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election and was a member of President Trump’s impeachment defense team. More recently, he has opposed sending funding to Ukraine. He also said Tuesday that “the first bill” he will bring before the House would be to support “our dear friend Israel.”
Over the past 24 hours, numerous clips of Johnson taking to task the mainstream media as well as Justice Department head Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray have emerged.

Johnson was elected to Congress after serving one term as a Louisiana state representative from 2015 until 2017. He has four children and attended Louisiana State University.
